Empowering the Next Generation: Our "Learn by Doing" STEM Journey

We are absolutely delighted to announce our enhanced collaboration with Mega Think in Kowloon City in past summer. Between July and August, we successfully launched five summer STEM interest classes (each consisting of six one-hour sessions). This initiative allowed us to bring our core philosophy of "Learn by Doing"—a hands-on, minds-on approach to learning—to Mega Think, officially opening the door to our partnerships with education centers.

Who We Are: The "Learn by Doing" Philosophy

Founded in 2017 by a group of registered engineers, "Learn by Doing" comprises a diverse team of professionals, including engineers, designers, and educators. Our vision is to maximize the benefits of technology for everyone. By providing tailored services and opportunities, we aim to engage children, students, working professionals, and seniors alike. Through training, employment opportunities, and community-building activities, we strive to foster social connection and ensure that everyone has access to abundant resources.

We deliver comprehensive courses to schools, corporate enterprises, and various organizations. Our curriculum is designed to impart knowledge and skills in technology, computational thinking, everyday problem-solving, and effective learning strategies, ultimately enhancing the quality of life. With a commitment to continuous improvement, we bring these transformative programs to diverse communities. At our core, we are passionate about improving lives and solving real-world problems, creating solutions that make everyday life better!

(Mega Think is located on the 6th floor, Kowloon City)

Thoughtful Curriculum Design: The micro:bit Hovercraft

When selecting topics and teaching methods, we exercise careful consideration. While there are excellent educational kits on the market—such as the Keyes Smart Home kit, which teaches students about sensors and smart home applications—we recognized that assembly can be time-consuming. To optimize the learning experience, we simplified the construction process, allowing students to dedicate more time and critical thought to programming.

Building on our years of collaboration with Mega Think, we took a step further and designed our own micro:bit Hovercraft course. Under the attentive guidance of our instructor, Mei, students use basic materials like boards and glue to assemble motor fans based on aerodynamic principles. This allows the hovercraft to float effectively by reducing friction. The course goes beyond mere micro:bit programming; it guides students through the entire cognitive process of hands-on creation, empowering them to think like true engineers!

Catering to Diverse Needs: Summer STEM Programs

Instructor Mei worked closely with students to solve problems using an engineering mindset. To cater to diverse interests, our summer STEM program offered two distinct pathways: the Keyes micro:bit Smart Home class and the micro:bit Hovercraft Design class. Students fascinated by multifunctional systems could use micro:bit programming to control smart home lighting, doors, windows, colors, and monitor temperature and humidity. Meanwhile, those who preferred building from scratch could construct their own hovercrafts. Regardless of the class chosen, all students this summer successfully cultivated the computational thinking and problem-solving skills of an engineer.

We would also like to express our deepest gratitude to the parents for their unwavering support. They understand that "a towering skyscraper begins from the ground up"—even the most complex and sophisticated creations start with the basics. Our very first lesson began with raw, unrefined materials, an approach that would not have been possible without the parents' understanding and encouragement.

(Instructor Brian guided students starting from simple materials, helping them understand that a hovercraft requires a strong downward airflow to generate buoyancy.)

The "Raw" Material Approach: A Proven Success

In fact, our partnership with Mega Think spans four years. Initially, we assumed that education centers preferred ready-made STEM products. However, after insightful discussions with Henry, we were pleasantly surprised to find that he shared our educational philosophy. We both believe that the true learning process lies in students engaging their hands and minds with "raw" materials. Aligned with our vision, we immediately began designing a curriculum starting with basic electronic components like transistors. Students learned to control motor speed by regulating electrical current, ultimately driving their self-made vehicles. We then translated these concepts into easily digestible teaching materials. The resulting classes were a resounding success, officially opening the door to our ongoing collaborations with education centers.
