I am thrilled to introduce you to a fascinating world. When you hear the word "biomimicry," what images come to mind?


Perhaps you immediately think of science fiction movies, picturing futuristic, sentient androids serving humanity in a cyberpunk setting. However, true bionics is far less "cyberpunk" and profoundly more grounded in reality! It is the art and science where researchers and engineers meticulously observe the intricate structures and remarkable capabilities of plants and animals in nature. From these observations, they draw inspiration to invent innovative technologies and machinery that significantly enhance our daily lives.


Through this brand-new biomimicry curriculum, our vision is to encourage students to step away from their electronic devices and air-conditioned rooms. We want you to use your own eyes and hands to experience the wonders of the natural world, personally uncovering the scientific treasures hidden all around us!


💡 Curriculum Highlights: The Radiant Firefly and the Magic of Fluorescence

Have you ever ventured into the countryside to observe fireflies? Watching them twinkle in the night is truly a magical and romantic experience.


The light emitted by fireflies is known as "bioluminescence." This is a monochromatic light produced by a chemical reaction within their own bodies. But nature holds another incredibly cool method of illumination!


Certain marine creatures, such as specific species of cuttlefish, possess the ability to produce "secondary fluorescence." How does this principle work? Simply put, their bodies act like magical energy converters! When they absorb higher-energy light (such as ultraviolet or UV light, which is invisible to the naked eye), special substances within their bodies "consume" this light. They then transform it and release it as a different color of light with lower energy.

Here is the key takeaway: This "secondary fluorescence" is an active process where the organism converts and emits light. It is absolutely not a passive reflection like a mirror! Isn't that extraordinary?


🎨 Hands-On Activity: Bring Nature's Magic Home!

Now that we understand this fascinating principle, it's time to put it into practice! Why not invite your parents to join you in creating a unique and magical "Fluorescent Masterpiece"?


Materials and Steps:

  1. Unleash Your Creativity: First, we will use specially formulated "water-soluble fluorescent paint" to draw a beautiful deep-sea fish (or any design you desire!) on our canvas.

  2. Construct the Magic Light Box: Next, we will apply our knowledge of engineering design. We will build a simple electrical circuit and install a UV LED bulb inside a small light box.

  3. Witness the Miracle: Finally, place your painted fish inside the light box, turn on the power, and let the UV LED shine its ultraviolet light onto your artwork... Ta-da! You will see your seemingly ordinary painting instantly emit a dazzling fluorescent glow, just like a luminous creature in the deep sea!


Through this engaging experiment, we not only learn scientific principles but also transform the wisdom of nature into a fun and interactive piece of art with our own hands!

🌟 仿生學大探索:向大自然偷師的工程魔法!


說到「仿生學」,大家腦海中會浮現甚麼畫面呢?


是不是立刻想到科幻電影裡,那些充滿未來感、甚至有自己思想的機械人?其實,真正的仿生學並沒有那麼「Cyberpunk」(數碼龐克),反而非常「貼地」!它是科學家和工程師們,透過仔細觀察大自然裡各種動植物的身體結構和神奇本領,從中獲得靈感,再發明出新科技和機械,讓我們的生活變得更美好。


在這個全新的仿生學課程裡,我們希望大家能暫時放下手機和平板電腦,走出冷氣房,用自己的雙眼和雙手,去感受大自然的奇妙,親自發掘隱藏在我們身邊的科學寶藏!


💡 課程精華搶先看:自帶光環的螢火蟲與神奇螢光


大家有去過郊外看螢火蟲嗎?看著牠們在黑夜中一閃一閃,是不是覺得很浪漫、很神奇?


螢火蟲發出的光,我們稱為「生物螢光」(Bioluminescence),這是牠們身體裡產生化學反應而發出的單色光。但大自然裡還有另一種超酷的發光方式!


有些海洋生物,例如某些種類的墨魚,牠們懂得產生「二次螢光」(Fluorescence)。這又是甚麼原理呢?簡單來說,牠們的身體就像一個神奇的能量轉換器!當牠們吸收了能量較高的光線(例如我們肉眼看不見的紫外線 UV),身體裡的特殊物質就會把這些光「吃」進去,然後轉化成另一種顏色、能量較低的光釋放出來。


重點來了!這種「二次螢光」是生物主動把光轉換並發射出來,絕對不是像鏡子那樣被動地反光喔!是不是很厲害?


🎨 動手做時間:把大自然的魔法帶回家!


明白了這個神奇的原理,我們當然要自己動手試試看!不妨邀請爸爸媽媽一起,製作一幅獨一無二的「神奇螢光畫」吧!


準備材料與步驟:


1. 發揮創意:首先,我們使用特製的「水溶性螢光顏料」,在畫紙上畫出一條美麗的深海魚(或者任何你喜歡的圖案!)。

2. 製作魔法燈箱:接著,我們要運用工程設計的知識,動手連接簡單的電路,把 UV LED 燈泡安裝在一個小燈箱裡。

3. 見證奇蹟:最後,把我們畫好的魚放進燈箱,接通電源,讓 UV LED 發出紫外線照射在畫作上…… 哇!大功告成!你會看到原本平平無奇的畫作,瞬間發出耀眼的螢光,就像深海裡發光的生物一樣!

透過這個小實驗,我們不只學到了科學原理,還親手把大自然的智慧變成了好玩的藝術品!
